Ensuring you have the right footwear and warm/ waterproof/ sun proof clothing for the activities you will be doing is vital. They will make you more comfortable and protect you from the elements.

Guardsy's Top Five Tips for Travel and Adventure First Aid:

1. Your Safety First - don't become a second casualty

If someone has been in an accident and is injured you should check for danger to yourself first, and then the casualty - if possible, make the situation safe. If an injury is serious or you are unsure speak to the emergency services - check your destination's emergency number before you leave and save it in your phone. Dial 999 in the UK and 112 through most of the EU.

2. Cleaning a Wound

Always try to clean a wound before applying any bandage or plaster to reduce the chance of infection. Don't try to remove anything embedded in the wound as it may cause further bleeding.

3. Using a Bandage or Plaster

Applying a bandage or plaster to a clean wound can help prevent infection. It is important to change dressings on a regular basis. Checking on the tightness of a bandage at regular intervals in important as swelling may mean you need to redress the area.

4. Staying Warm

Shock and remaining stationary can cause body temperature to drop. This can become deadly. Being prepared with the right clothing is the best way to stay warm - always pack a wind and waterproof layer, even if only for an emergency. A foil blanket is a great addition and can be used to reflect up to 90% of your body heat back on to you.

5. Sprains and Swelling

Twisting your ankle, bruises, insect bites and nettle stings can all be causes of sprains and swelling. Using an instant ice pack and provide relief when applied to swollen areas, which can help reduce pain. If appropriate you might also choose to carry a few painkillers and antihistamine. Its best to stick with over the counter medicines you know and have used before. If you're unsure ask your doctor or pharmacist what to pack.

About Me

I've been a backpacker, holiday maker and business traveller, stranded unexpectedly in strange and amazing places for annoyingly small windows of time, so I started to research and write about ways to make the most of these opportunities. This blog is for all of those out there who like me never want to find themselves stood still.
